Pig-butchering scams, a multibillion-dollar crypto fraud industry, have evolved into a transnational security threat, blending human trafficking, money laundering, and social engineering. Chainalysis’ Andrew Fierman and anti-fraud expert Erin West warn that these schemes now permeate every corner of the financial system, demanding urgent action from banks, exchanges, and regulators.

Criminals exploit dating apps and social media to groom victims, luring them into fake cryptocurrency investments. The scams promise false profits before draining accounts entirely. Southeast Asian crime syndicates dominate this shadow economy, leveraging crypto’s pseudonymity to evade detection.
